Pete King Quartet@Seven Arts Leeds Thursday 13th December 2013

Pete King alto sax, Steve Melling piano, Geoff Gascoyne bass, and Mark Fletcher drums

”A wonderful musician, Peter King, of course, is a master of his instrument. People are aware of that here in America as well as in England” – Elvin Jones

“World’s great Altoist” – “My Man!” – Nat Adderley

“I feel very lucky to have met you and have worked with you. – Lalo Schifrin

Pete King has been in the jazz business for more than 50 years. He has recently completed a new and extensive autobiography (Northway Books) has come back from a highly successful appearance at the Rochester Jazz Festival in New York.

Pete has been a major influence on the British Jazz scene ever since he played (at the age of eighteen!) the opening of Ronnie Scott’s Club, London’s internationally famous Jazz Mecca. “Had Scott’s Club died overnight and been heard of no more, it could still have justified its existence by pointing to a discovery like Peter King.”(Benny Green)

He has worked with such legends as Bud Powell, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Milt Jackson, Lalo Schifrin, Frank Foster’s ‘new’ Count Basie Band and the Ray Charles Orchestra. He has also recorded with Hampton Hawes, Al Haig, Philly Joe Jones, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and many others, including Red Rodney, who said this of Peter. “He’s got that natural growl in his playing – yet he’s soft and beautiful when he wants to be.”

As a featured performer, Peter has long been a favourite of European jazz festival audiences. He was the only non-American artist invited to perform at the Gem Theatre in Kansas City during a week of celebrations in honour of Charlie Parker in March 1999.

Pete King and his Quartet play at Seven Arts, 31 Harrogate Road, Leeds LS73PD on Thursday evening December 13th at 8pm. Tickets are £16 full price, £13 concessionary price, available in advance from Seven Arts or by ringing 0113 26 26 777

Full time student standby tickets available on the door only £5
